Dec 7, 2011:

Wait, This Isn't Buenos Aires!

We woke up this morning and ...well, we're not in Buenos Aires! Still in Phoenix?! AeroMexico at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport refused to check in our tandem bike box, saying that it was too long. But we had confirmed the dimensions of the box with the airline when we purchased our tickets and understood that we would simply pay a $125 over-size baggage fee. And we reconfirmed this last week. So something is wrong with AeroMexico's baggage policy.

We're currently working to get the story straight. We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, we are having a lot of trouble trying to figure out an alternative way of getting the bike to Ushuaia.

December 6th, 11:03 AM All ready to go. Tandem bike box size is 84"x9"x31" and weighs 48 lbs.

12:34 PM Rolling up to the ticket counter - excited! We're going to do it!!

12:35 PM The frustration begins. AeroMexico's baggage policy is muddled. We even called a customer representative on the spot and confirmed that we were able to check the tandem box in. But when they spoke to the ticket counter's supervisor (in Spanish and in a low voice), the story changed.

12:47 PM Tauru tries to keep it cool, protective of the bike. They said we could board the plane, but we couldn't take the bike. As if we'd part with our tandem!! The whole point of the trip IS the tandem!

1:16 PM Christi tries to keep it cool in front of the airport and waits for a friend of ours to pick us up. Passport in hand, but not needed at the moment.

7:31 PM Trying to figure a way to get the bike down to Ushuaia.
